game-of-thrones-season-6-tease-art-top

On Twitter today, HBO released three new promo videos for Game of Thrones season 6. None of them include any new footage, but they are all deliciously suggestive of what is to come. The unifying thread between these three new videos: everyone is in some kind of trouble.

The first focuses on House Stark, or what’s left of it. The video is narrated by Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton. His message is clear: Winterfell is his, we’re all invited to come see. Though perhaps more specifically, this feels like it’s something that Ramsay might say in a letter to Jon Snow. That’s assuming Jon Snow makes it through the bloody mess he was left with at the end of season 5 (survey says: he probably will).

The second video shows the flag of House Lannister, which was also left in a state of disarray at the end of season 5. We hear the voice of the High Sparrow (Jonathan Price), perhaps speaking to his followers. We are reminded of Cersei’s shame (thanks to meme-star Septa Unella) and the fact that even though Cersei was freed from her captivity, the whole of King’s Landing is under siege. The Faith Militant pose a great threat to the Lannister dynasty, or what’s left of it. Poor Tommen, he just wanted to play with his cats.

The final clip is about everyone’s favorite, House Targaryen. Though she’s been blessed with the gift of being unburnt (and three big-ass dragons), Daenerys is yet to really accomplish anything that would suggest she will ever rule Westeros. The narration from a Dothraki voice, perhaps that of Joe Naugahu as Khal Jhaqo (the leader of the Khalasar that surrounded Dany in the final episode), reminds us that she is neither safe, nor in full control of her destiny where we last saw her.

It’s nice to see the Game of Thrones marketing push starting in earnest. It means that we’re getting closer to more information, a full trailer and yes, even season 6 itself. These marketing bits and bobs aren’t going to give away chunks of story, but they are very effective in setting the tone for the season. This season’s tone will have a lot to do with the dominant characters of the story being in very threatened positions. The major houses, the most beloved characters, have all hit their own form of rock bottom. How many will rise from the ashes in the battle for control of the realm? That remains to be seen.
