Would that it were so simple.
Sometimes making good trailer is so simple. Take this new trailer for Hail, Caesar!, the upcoming film from the Coen Brothers. It’s basically a single scene from the film, in which a director (Ralph Feinnes) attempts to coax a passable performance from an actor (Alden Ehrenreich) who can’t quite drop his southern drawl.
It’s simple and effective.
There seems to be a curious lack of excitement around this February 2 release. Perhaps it’s getting lost in the Star Wars hangover or the awards season shuffle, but we should be talking about Hail, Caesar! a bit more. It’s the Coen Brothers writing and directing a movie. That should be enough. On top of that, it appears to be the Coen Brothers vibrant sense of showmanship in full, something we haven’t seen since Burn After Reading or perhaps O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? That’s not to say that No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man, True Grit and Inside Llewyn Davis weren’t good movies. They are all fine films. Intermittently fun films. But Hail, Caesar! wears the cologne of a much more brisk, outlandish affair. This feels like it could be one of those special Coen Brothers experiences, especially when we consider the long and wonderful cast list.
