Watch and Learn How All of Marvel’s Famous End Credits Scenes Were Created

When Marvel Studios teased the formation of The Avengers in a credits scene that followed the first Iron Man, it began a new trend for the comic book movie studio, which continued linking all of the movies together to form the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nowadays they’re expected with every Marvel Studios movie, and even some other movie franchises have followed suit, teasing what might be in store for the future.

So how did these end credits scenes come about? A new 11-minute featurette called Phase 2 Tag Scenes: A Making-Of from the Blu-ray box set of all the Phase Two films (available right now exclusively at Amazon) dives into the thought process and making of these end credits scenes with Kevin Feige, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg and many more talking about the signature teaser scenes.

The featurette runs through all the credits scenes that have been done over the years, even going so far as to talk about the inception of some of them. What’s fascinating is that there isn’t a meeting where everyone sits down and tries to figure out how they’re going to tease the next movie. Feige says the scenes usually come up naturally while making the movie.

One of the prime examples of this process is the shawarma gag from The Avengers, which was shot after production was completed on the movie. There’s some great brief footage from behind the scenes of that one, and they even tell you where the restaurant is in California.

Other cool moments from this featurette include a behind the scenes look at Seth Green recording lines as Howard the Duck for the fun Guardians of the Galaxy credits tag, one of the few that doesn’t actually set up the next movie.

For fans looking for hints about what we can expect to be teased in Phase Three, which begins with Captain America: Civil War, there’s brief talk about the major overarching element of the Infinity Stones. And if you need a refresher, The Avengers: Age of Ultron Blu-ray and DVD release had a whole featurette dedicated to the history of the Infinity Stones to make sure everyone is prepared for what’s coming in The Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and 2019.
