Independence Day 2

It’s only December 13, so it will be a long while before we celebrate Independence Day the national holiday. But that won’t stop 20th Century Fox from celebrating Independence Day the movie franchise with a new trailer for the upcoming sequel.

Let’s break the story of Independence Day: Resurgence down: It’s been 20 years since the events of the first film. Earth has used alien technology to upgrade its defense systems in anticipation of a new attack. But as Jeff Goldblum explains, it probably isn’t enough. And a grizzled Bill Pullman confirms that yes, they are coming back.

Now, watch the trailer:

“That’s definitely bigger than the last one,” a line that says more about the movie itself than a single spaceship. Based on these two minutes alone, we’re already seeing an amped-up version of Roland Emmerich’s first film. The action looks monstrous (and potentially a little bloated, but we’ll see, the last one had a pretty great rhythm).

There also appears to be plenty of Legacyquel stuff going on here. It Follows star Maika Moore is seen as President Whitmore’s daughter. She’s not just a love interest for a new character (played by Liam Hemsworth), but appears to have followed in the heroic pilot footsteps of her father. We also see Jesse Usher as the son of Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith’s character in the original). Even though not every character from the original will return, it appears as if all the family lines are still there, still trying to keep aliens from destroying all of our precious monuments.

Here’s what I’m most interested in seeing, as this is perhaps the most interesting thought experiment for an Independence Day sequel. I want to see how the world has rebuilt in 20 years. Remember, it wasn’t just the iconic White House that was destroyed. Almost every major city around the world was wiped off the map by the initial alien attack. That means no Washington, no Los Angeles, no Paris, etc. What does the world look like 20 years later? The hope is that the filmmakers do some interesting world-building in the run up to what I can only imagine is another major clash with aliens.

Independence Day; Resurgence is due in theaters June 24, 2016.
