I’ve gone the record many times that I’m a big fan of Avengers: Age of Ultron and will do so again here: I am a big fan of Avengers: Age of Ultron. I like its weird energy and how jam-packed with stuff it is. I love the banter between these characters and I love watching their relationships put through the grinder. Marvel’s name may be above the title, but this is a Joss Whedon movie thorough and through – you come out of this shiny, colorful, pop culture extravaganza feeling a little roughed up. It’s his way.
Any yet, I’ll be the first to admit that it feels like there are pieces of the story missing and important beats excised. This is especially evident on repeat viewings, where you can really start to see unnecessary, studio-mandated scenes (like Thor’s dumb cave adventure) butting heads with the stuff that actually matters. A new deleted scene from the film has been revealed as part of that new Marvel Cinematic Universe phase 2 box set and it feels like the kind of thing that really should have been in the final cut… and not just because it’s a fight scene between Thor and Vision.
Anyone who has seen Avengers: Age of Ultron will recognize where this scene should have gone. In the final cut, Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor brings Paul Bettany‘s Vision to life with his lightning and the android superhero immediately launches into exposition. It turns out that the original version of the film saw Thor and Vision throw down, exchanging blows for a few minutes until everyone realizes that they’re among friends. The visual effects aren’t finished (which gives the whole thing a charmingly cheap look), but you can watch the scene below:
This isn’t the first deleted scene included on that box set that we’ve covered today (see also: Drax’s tattoos), but this one actually feels like it should have been in the movie. In the theatrical cut of the film, Vision shows up, drops drops a bunch of information, and instantly joins our heroes in the final battle. It’s a little awkward and more than a little rushed. This scene isn’t just another action beat. It establishes him as a force to be reckoned with and showcases each of his powers, one by one, so we know what he’s capable of doing before the big brawl with Ultron. It feels necessary.
Whedon’s first cut of Avengers: Age of Ultron was supposedly over three hours long. While I don’t need this movie to be that lengthy, I can’t help but wonder what else was chopped, and whether the missing material would have improved helped smooth out the film’s rougher edges. This scene is a tiny example, but could it be indicative of a larger problem? Was this a case of there simply being too much movie and vital stuff having to go?
I guess I’ll have to rematch Avengers: Age of Ultron for the nth time to form an opinion.
